PRESS RELEASE

GIFTING OF THE ‘MADE IN INDIA’ VACCINE TO SEYCHELLES

Today, the Government of India has provided 50,000 doses of the ‘Made in India’ vaccine to the Government of Seychelles s a testimony to the special relationship and uniquely close friendship between India and Seychelles. This consignment is a gift from the people and Government of India to the people and Government of Seychelles. High Commissioner of India H.E. General Dalbir Singh Suhag handed over the vaccine consignment to the Foreign Minister of Seychelles H.E. Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde in a ceremony held at Seychelles International Airport on 22 January 2021.

An Indian Navy Aircraft ‘Boeing P8I’ was specially tasked with carrying the entire consignment of ‘Made in India’ vaccines into Seychelles. Seychelles is the first African country to receive the vaccine from India. These have been received within a week of the launch of the world’s largest vaccination drive in India under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 16 January 2021. The Prime Minister of India had stated on this occasion: We are committed that India's vaccines, our production capacity, serve the interest of the whole of humanity.”

The gifting of the vaccine supplies on an emergency basis, shows India’s intent of pursuing its vision of SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region), a commitment to build capacities and self-reliance in all neighbouring countries. It is a reflection of India’s inclusive approach for collective good, deeply ingrained in its strategic outlook espoused by its ancient culture and articulated as Vasudheva Kutumbakam (the world is one family).

Prior to the delivery of vaccines, a live webinar training programme, covering administrative and operational aspects of COVISHIELD vaccination program, was conducted on 19-20 January 2021 for immunization managers, cold chain officers, communication officers and data managers from Seychelles. The program, organised by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of Government of India, was attended by Health Care Professionals in Seychelles, led by program manager for immunisation Mrs. Florida Bijoux. It may be recalled that, at the peak of first wave of COVID-19 outbreak in Seychelles, Government of India donated two consignments of urgent medicine supplies adding to 4 Tonnes, which were delivered to Seychelles on a war footing through a chartered Air India aircraft on 15 April 2020 and by Indian Navy Ship INS Kesari on 7 June 2020, respectively.

Health, being foundation to the economic and social development of a country, has always been one of the main focus of the Government of India in its Development Partnership Assistance to Seychelles. India had previously gifted lifesaving State-of-the-Art Medical Equipment worth USD 8.75 Million (SCR 193 Million), which is now distributed across all the Hospitals and Health Clinics in Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, apart from assistances for Health Information System (HIS) project and donation of 10 State-of-the-Art Ambulances in 2018.

This is the level of commitment and unwavering support that India provides to its closest maritime neighbour and friend, Seychelles, and work untiringly towards improving the health care infrastructure and safeguarding its population, especially during these testing times. India also conveys the enduring good wishes and prayers from the people of India to the people of Seychelles.
